I had the pleasure of being invited to a friend’s wedding this past weekend in the beautiful town of Canmore, AB. I do have to say it was such a beautiful choice, although it was raining for a good portion of the weekend, we were still able to enjoy the wedding and explore Canmore, both before and after the wedding. The town, one hour from Calgary, is the prefect get away for a weekend of enjoying the amazing mountain view, relaxing, hiking, visiting unique boutiques, and going out for some breakfast, lunch, or dinner at some of the most amazing restaurants I have ever been to!
Hotel @ Windtower Suites and Lounge
Staying at the Windtower Suites and Lodge, was such a great experience. The location of the hotel made it easy to travel to most places in the town within 3-5 mins. The staff at the hotel was very friendly and helpful. The hotel rooms had more of a cabin-type atmosphere, but overall the rooms were very clean, comfy, and spacious. I was also surprised that we had an outside balcony to enjoy the view of the mountains. The continental breakfast had everything I needed: eggs, bacon (one of my favorites), toast etc. A majority of the hotels don’t offer breakfast and if they do its crappy muffins and coffee!
Brunch @ Summit Cafe
Although we had free breakfast at our hotel, we wanted to venture out and see what cool coffee shops and breakfast places that Canmore had to offer. After Googling we noticed that the reviews for the Summit Café were outstanding, so we HAD TO GO!
Summit Café is definitely a small-town coffee shop with a lot of personality. The staff are friendly and breakfast was great; very filling. I have to say it is way better than going to a Ricky’s or Denny’s and experiencing well… blandness. Definitely a great spot to hit before going skiing or hiking! Their homemade Chocolate Chunk Cookies and freshly brewed coffee are to die for! We chose the “Only” Omelette and the Breakfast Burrito (pictured below), which left us quite satisfied! Everything served is spirited and alive, starting from the people who work there to the décor. And last but not least.. the food!
For my next visit to Canmore, you won’t even need to ask where I will be going for breakfast!
Lunch – The Wood Restaurant and Lounge
We needed a place to get something to eat after the ceremony and it was nice out, so we wanted to hit up the patio to grab a beer and appetizer before the wedding reception. We drove down Main Street and found this gem! The AMAZING street appeal with that HUGE patio and rustic vibe, won me over instantly. It was another plus since the game was on. There was tons of indoor and outdoor seating and the view was absolutely breathtaking. Good service, a decent menu, and plenty of beers on tap and bottled. Hoegarden was my choice of beer while my friend decided to go for the Fowl Mouth Extra Special Bitter, which was our waiter’s recommendation. Our food was very good, so good I had to pack some to go! I had the chicken fingers and fries and my friend had the three cheese. I cannot wait to go back to try some of their mains!!
Dinner – Crazyweed
I don’t think that my getaway would have been the same without going to Crazy Weed. The fact that the locals got excited about it when I mentioned it, made me realize that the decision to go there was the correct one!
This restaurant came highly recommended and we could see why – from the outset we enjoyed the ambiance, our great server and then the food… if you don’t know me… I LOVE FOOD.
We found ourselves struggling to choose a starter from the tasty options offered. We decided to go for the Salt and Pepper Calamari (pictured above). It was paired with an amazing Nham Jim Dip. This was really good and more than adequate in size to appease two hungry people who still had entrees to come.
These entrees were delicious and varied! I chose the Sticky 5 Spice Spare Ribs (pictured above) and Dorian went for the 8 oz. Alberta Sterling Ribeye (pictured below). Both satisfied our palates. It’s a small menu that covers an incredibly large range.
Don’t get me wrong bring your cheque book because inexpensive it is not – but well worth the price. Overall a great experience – we will for sure be back!
