Over the past weekend, a group of friends and I participated in Color Me Rad, a 5K run through a tsunami of color bombs across Canada Olympic Park. And what a blast it was! (Yes, that was a lame pun, but so what?)
Essentially, everybody starts off with clothing as white as your dad’s tighty whities (no skid marks) and eventually everyone is bombarded by a swarm of purple, pink, yellow, orange, purple, green and blue. Throughout the run, there are a number of different sections where staff blast participants with color bombs and encourage everyone to frolic amidst the sea of colors.
Eventually, after working your way through the uphill, rocky battle that is Canada Olympic Park, you cross the finish line in one final blitzkreig of color and join the rest of the participants for photo-ops and a concert.
Oh, and by the way, in case you were wondering, the non-toxic, non-rash-inducing, Kroger branded, colored cornstarch tastes absolutely terrible. And I had my fair share of it, as you can see in my Snapchat below.
All in all, it was a pretty rad day. See what I did there? Surprisingly, the weather actually cooperated despite numerous forecasts calling for scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. Do meteorologists even know what they are talking about?
Anyways, for those of you wanting to participate, I definitely recommend you sign up next year! It’s definitely an awesome event that masks a fun form of exercise with a great excuse to whip colored corn starch at your friend’s faces.
It’s definitely not an event I would attend more than once, but the memories and photos you’ll have will last you for a life-time.
For those of you who can’t wait until Color Me Rad returns to Calgary next year, there are a number of different clones of the 5K trek. Most occur in the United States but there are a few that visit Canada as well.
- The Color Run hits Calgary on August 30, 2014
- Color Vibe 5K has yet to announce it’s Calgary date (TBA)
- Run or Dye hits Calgary on August 23, 2014
In terms of snapping photos, we waited until the end of the race to take photos with our phones. Nothing like trying to get colored corn starch out of all the nooks and crannies of your iPhone.
However, for those of you wishing to capture those Kodak moments during the race, a great idea is to place your phone in a ziplock bag which still allows you to take photos but prevents any corn starch from destroying your phone.
Or another great idea is to bring a GoPro camera along for the ride. I am still pretty chapped for not bringing mine. Check out the link for GoPro’s coverage of Color Me Rad in Toronto.
Have fun at the Calgary Stampede this weekend everybody! Until next time!
